Rakshabandhan

Well today was rakhi. When I was a kid, we had a story in our Hindi lessons about how a small girl feels bad on this festival and she makes a brother by tying him a rakhi. At that time, even I felt the very same thing. But as I grew up, came to know about the typical male chauvinist world and especially the male chauvinism in our country, where Durga is worshipped as the mahashakti and at the same time, so many female feeticides occur even in the so called educated society, I developed a typical feminist attitude towards life.
So on this particular festival, personally I feel that instead of the so called attitudes that the females tying the rakhi on their brothers' hands and getting gifts in return and also a promise for protection, there should be an attitude in parents to teach their daughters how to be independent, protecting their ownselves rather than being dependent on their brothers and at the same time what we need is a basic change in the typical backward mentality regarding the females.
